I studied fine art at Virginia Commonwealth
University, majoring in sculpture and furniture design, receiving
my BFA in 2000. I started tattooing while I was in college, but
it was short-lived, which was a good thing. I had poor teachers
with little to no instruction. Although I would have loved to be
completely immersed in the tattoo world, I realized that is was
difficult for me to learn tattooing full-time and try to get my
degree, going to school full-time.
Having taken a long break from tattooing,
I accepted an elementary and middle school art teacher position
in Sussex, Virginia. It was one of the best experiences of my life.
It was a difficult decision leaving my students the following year
for a job tattooing in Arlington, Virginia. Kids are pretty amazing
and teach you a lot of lessons about yourself.
Working at Rick's Tattoo in Arlington, Virginia gave me hope that the industry was not completely filled with arrogant, unprofessional tattoo shop owners. Rick Cherry, the owner, is a no-nonsense, what-you-see-is-what-you-get shop owner with a work ethic stronger then steel. I really enjoyed working for him and have a lot of respect for him. He's "awesome!" (Dan and Addie, I miss you guys all the time!)
Unfortunately, the cost of living
in the DC area was a lot more than I could bear. It was different
growing up there and living under my father's roof. How did he do
it? I needed an alternative and a wonderful opportunity arose.
Iron Age Studio happened to be looking
for artists. I moved soon after, to the "STL," a city
I have always liked. I work with a great crew and have learned so
much being there. My tattooing has defintitely jumped to the next
level, and I am so thankful to be there.
